Scammed out of thousands of dollars - help
« on: April 13, 2022, 01:14:06 AM »
Hi all! This is my first time posting and I'm hoping for some help or at the very least, support. I can't believe I'm admitting this, but over the period of about a year I spent thousands of dollars on Keen due to a very messy personal situation and medical issues. This is money that came out of my own earnings and that I couldn't afford to lose. Readers took full advantage of me and would keep me talking to them on chat for hours at a time, multiple times a week and sometimes in a day. I easily spent hundreds of dollars in single sessions talking about nothing new. I was wondering if anyone has any idea if I could recover any of the lost money? Luckily I have a good job and haven't been financially ruined by this, but I was still taken for thousands upon thousands of dollars which at the bare minimum is a major ethical breach. I don't want any trouble and REALLY don't want to get a lawyer involved but think what happened to me falls under criminal activity, especially because I read with many of the same readers repeatedly. I think it's also worth mentioning that I currently have no desire to use Keen anymore (and haven't in a long time) so it's not like this would ever happen again. Thanks for any advice you can give.

I think you’re just gonna have to suck it up as a loss and a lesson learned. No one put a gun to your head to spend that amount of money on what you chose. Plus the terms and conditions of all of these psychic services specifically state they’re for entertainment purposes only. You won’t have a leg to stand on in court.

Your situation is no different to many of us here.
Talking to psychics is a little like taking an emotional pain killer.
All here seek help and spiritual assistance when going through difficult times, and many of us have lost thousands talking to advisors that are really not that talented - or worse still - frauds.  We learned the hard way.

But there is no way to get the funds back
You have to chalk this one up to experience.
If you read in the future - stick with the very few that have solid reputations and will not let you binge read, or charge you a fortune - I'm talking about readers like Kisha, Yona etc.
Just pray thanks that you are not underwater financially.
If it helps - think of it like a bad trade.
You invested badly, and lost...
It's great learning experience - you are stronger, and wiser.
Hang in there.

There isn't a way to get those funds back, because you were not forced or billed without your permission. You picked the readers, made the choices to talk to them, controlled the amount of funds you loaded to spend. You had the ability to end the calls with them at any time. It was all in your control, so no crime was committed. Something also to consider, the readers have a punishment of sorts if they are the ones who end calls. Not only would they risk bad ratings for hanging-up on clients, but they lose ranking, and get graded on it and other stats by keen. I have had readers remind me to end chats (when we have concluded, and to keep me from being charged another minute) for this reason, because they can't end it themselves without taking a hit of some kind from the company. As much as it sucks to lose so much money, it is important to have personal accountability. That is also a big part of addressing why you called them so much, and will help prevent doing it again. The reader's job is to take the calls, and the control of the time and money spent is really on us. The only exception to that is in cases of like spell and energy scams. In truth, it is like any other addiction. A cake doesn't force someone to keep eating it.

It may help to consider that you could not sue a bakery because you liked their cakes and bought a lot of them, and then regret the money spent and weight gained. It is the same thing with making the personal choice to spend money on any service or item. Cannot sue someone else for your own choices.

So sorry to hear but we have all been there here :/ I also spent thousands of dollars in 2019 asking for some guy I don’t even care anymore.  That is my biggest regret but also I know it was my responsibility and I chose to do it :/

“Emotional pain killer” is the right word!

Im So sorry that you lost so much. Like most of us here on this forum, we lost lots of money to our detriment. We knew fully well what we were doing, we accepted the charges, we accepted calls and we accepted the bullsh*t they fed us until we realised most of them are con artist. The sad part is we only come to that realization after the loss, both financially and emotionally. I am grateful for this forum though. It stopped me from calling a lot of psychics because Ive read the reviews here. Thank goodness that you are financially afloat as many have maxed out credit cards just to listen to some lies, including me. I have learnt my lesson though and hope others do as well...

There needs to be something down about fake reviews. If they would stop allowing people to buy reviews then it would save a lot of people money

Most platforms have strict rules on the readers against manipulating reviews, and also have it so x amount needs to be spent to even be eligible to leave a review (there are times where I have wished I could leave a negative to warn others, but session was not long enough). When you think about it, it would be really hard, and really expensive to purchase even a small number of reviews. Consider they would have to have a different user account for each review,  and then spend the required amount to have the ability to review. Then in order for that to even have any kind of benefit or boost for the reader, they would have to do that in the hundreds or thousands of reviews. All why risking getting caught and shut down. Not very plausible when you consider the expense, accounts needed, risks and so forth. Some may try it, but doubtful on big scales.

There are companies that offer a service where sellers can purchase reviewers so its not the psychic that writes their own reviews but has it set up to where a group of people are getting free reads in exchange for leaving reviews.

If the reader is giving away free readings in exchange for reviews, how does it work if the "costumer" is  not paying for the minimal minutes to leave those reviews?

Did anyone force you to make these calls? you're an adult, you make adult decisions. You made the calls, you spoke to readers for hours on end.  It's like gambling, you take 10k to craps table and blow it, it's not the fault of the dealer or even the casino.  First, we need to stop blaming others for our bad decisions. This has nothing to do with reviews either. there are readers on this board that have been bashed and said they are horrible etc and they were the best readers i've had, and their keen reviews reflected it as well. So lets not play the blame game.  You could have hung up, you could have stopped calling. But you didn't because you got something from it, doesn't matter if the outcome came true or not, you were calling because it gave you emotional satisfaction, it tamed those thoughts you had, even maybe with some it was like therapy. All things that cost money for a persons time and you don't get refunded if they don't work.  People spend just as much on therapy and come out saying it did nothing for them, do they get a refund? no.

There is NO ETHICAL breach here, you're trying to make yourself feel better by saying you were taken advantage of by willingly calling psychics. I'm sorry, i know this is a hard pill to swallow, but we need to take responsibility for our own actions and stop blaming others for our choices. I've spent my fair share and i don't even want to think about the amount and what i could have done with that money. But then i remember the difficult times i went through, and had no one to talk to or who even understood what i was going through. And it helped me get through some difficult times.  It also helped me see things in a different light.

What criminal activity? You have buyers remorse and now are trying to blame someone else for your own mistakes and actions.  You made adult decisions, you are now dealing with adult consequences .  This for entertainment purposes, you agreed to terms of use before you embarked on your journey. Keen has iron clad policies. Unless they threatened you with curses and told you to wire them thousands privately, you don't have a case.

i know many won't like this dose of truth because it's always easier to blame others than take responsibility for oneself.  you learned a lesson and going forward you will not make it again or maybe in a moment of despair you will. And even if you do and need that emotional satisfaction, then remember that's okay as long as you know that and take that responsibility.

There are companies that offer a service where sellers can purchase reviewers so its not the psychic that writes their own reviews but has it set up to where a group of people are getting free reads in exchange for leaving reviews.

Again, that is not possible on most of the sites because they have minimum requirements for amount of time and money spent to even open the ability to leave a review. Please check and verify your sources to provide evidence of this. On keen, the charge starts instantly when the session starts. if a reader offers free minutes (and they can only offer a couple of minutes), we still cannot rate unless we pay for additional minutes that meet the requirement. What you are saying does not make sense. I think you are thinking of things like yelp, and various other review sites out there that do not require purchases, and are not even psychic related. Most of the psychic platforms have spending requirements built into their systems, and rules. You can read the terms of services to find the info. Or you could go do a one minute session, and see for yourself that it won't let you leave a review due to not meeting the spending and time requirements. Most of the platforms have that to prevent abuse from both clients and readers.
