This psychic line called thecircle.com or what used to be called, had a mandate of $500 or something max per month. That I know because I used to use that service long ago. It is UK based service. Why did they have the mandate? Because they care. They care about the customers, about their spending. They understand that when we are being let down by someone, how it feels, where can will power fly away, and how can that take a toll on our debts because we want to hear something positive from someone during those times.
Like alcohol has an age limit, like marijuana has limitations, so should these addiction-based services have restriction.
Why is it so difficult to understand that keen makes money off of a person's misery, their immediate distress. Otherwise they have no income.
I dont see how I can control credit card's transaction via keen but yes they should have a limit too for such services. Someone has to take charge for these addiction based services, one day it will happen. And trust me, that will be for our best. Much better than realising that we spent say $15000 on keen readings instead of having it in savings!
And for those who want to spend more than $500 per month (and 500 is an arbitrary number), yes they should be allowed but it should not be made easy for them either. Just for example. I am thinking out loud anyways.

I'm not saying that it wouldn't be good thing to have that cap.  And for the companies that do, good on them.  BUT the responsibility still falls on us.  AND I am just as guilty as most on this site of not being able to control myself. I seriously hope that by deleting my cards off of Keen that it will make it more difficult in my moment of need - having to go find a card (that isn't maxed) and enter in the details just go into a reading.  Luckily - I am in Canada, so my paypal doesn't work on Keen...

I really should put my credit cards in a ziplock bag of water and put them into the freezer so I really don't have access... Which... I think I just might do when I get home ;)

We're not victims. I really don't mean this in a mean way, but if you can't accept responsibility for your own behaviors, you'll probably be addicted for a very long time. Example: if an alcoholic can't admit he/she has a problem he probably will be an alcoholic for a long time.

You can't blame the freedom allowed by our financial system for your spending woes.

Do you think everyone who runs up their cards actually pays them off responsibly? It affects the whole financial system and hurts everyone when people run up debts they can't possibly pay back. Keen gets their money, but the credit card company may not. It would be better for the credit card companies to watch spending on pay per minute sites and cap spending if it starts to get out of control, and they have the total right to do that because it is THEIR money.

Seriously?  You don't understand how getting credit works?  If you don't qualify, you don't get it.

If I wanted to spend $100,000 on gumballs next month and then default, I could.  Why don't I?  Because I am a responsible person with no mental health issues and I take responsibility for my actions.

The credit card company doesn't, and never ever should, be allowed to choose where my money goes.  And yes, it is my money.  I pay the bill.  I've signed and pledged responsibility for payment in my agreement.  If I want to spend it on gumballs, Keen, hats for my cats, a trip, whatever the hell I want, it's my choice.  And defaulting?  It's a business.  It's calculated into their business formula.

I'm not 5 years old or an idiot.  I don't need someone going through my Target transaction Big Brother style before it's "approved", going "tut, tut ... you've reached the citizen quota on placemats!  I'm going to have to say no to that! Another pair of socks? My, my.  Three more pairs and we won't be able to approve any more until next year dear."

If you need someone to monitor your spending, petition the court to have a conservator or guardian appointed  to handle your finances.  A credit card company isn't responsible for your actions.

What's next?  Blame your cell phone carrier because you get unlimited talk time and that made you do it?

Soooo... wondering your thoughts on this: what if the financial institution allows you to go significantly over your spending limit?

That's my situation. I totally agree that we are responsible for the spending. That said, after 30+ years of building great credit and being a super responsible person :D I went out of control with psychic calling and maxed my credit card. But it didn't end there, because my bank allowed me to go 50% over and above my credit limit -- and my limit was high! I didn't catch it until I came out of my temporary insanity. Still -- I do feel it's 100% my responsibility, but a friend suggested I could take it up with the bank that they allowed me to keep spending after I'd reached and exceeded my limit. The bank says they have that discretion for valued customers... but that I can take it up with credit card services if I choose to. I haven't decided if I will ... but am considering it.

Interestingly, keen was able to keep charging my card while california psychics was not.

Thoughts?

They aren't doing it because they care.  They are doing it lessen chargebacks.

I've known of some other platforms that had a similar mandate when people were over charging to their house phones (before mobiles of course). I doubt they still have it though with the use of credit cards.

I don't use my credit card for readings. I almost always use readers/platforms who accept Paypal. It is direct cash.

Over the limit transactions from merchants that have been flagged as risky (such as casinos) are denied by a lot of card issuers.  But, depending on the issuer and your rating and history, you may have a green light, i.e. you go to Vegas a lot, spend a lot and pay your 15k bill in full and on time every month.  CP may be flagged for over limit transactions on your card issuers list.

But the very least they could do is add features that help us track and limit our own spending. If we pay a premium for their service, why not? But that would reduce their profits so they will never do it willingly.

The DO have that feature.

Click on Transaction Details and your transaction summary for the current month will come up.  Use the drop down box to view your monthly transaction history for the prior 13 months.

According to an act passed in 2009 (assuming you are in the US) they are not supposed to allow you to charge over your limit unless you have opted in to that feature and agreed to it.

Thanks. Something to look into... I have a feeling it may be somewhere in my financial institution's fine print, but I'll see.

Nope. I am talking about having a features where you can set specific spending limits, per month, per transaction, and then when you reach that limit you can choose to get a warning message or be completely cut off. It would be the customer's choice. And as I mentioned before, also a waiting period before you are allowed to change preset limits so people can't do it impulsively.

They could also put easier ways to see how much you've spent, total, per month, year, or for the life of your account without digging through each transaction.

This is YOUR job, not the credit card company's.

I really can't sit here and read this thread anymore. Blaming the ccard companies because you can't control your spending habits is a whole other issue separate from being addicted to psychic readings.

Yeah, you're obviously not really resding the thread or understanding what some of us are talking about because your responses are way off. I wasn't even talking about credit card companies there, I was talking about Keen adding features that would help people track their spending. Most credit card companies in fact have features like that. I don't know where you see all this stuff about blaming credit card companies or whatever else you keep reacting to.

take the words "the ccard companies" and replace with "keen".  same applies.

If you want to limit yourself... do this.

Go buy yourself a pre-paid Visa gift card. Use that as your payment method.

Done. :)

Mine did, just recently actually... I knew I was over... I kept using it.  Now I have a HUGE minimum payment to make.  So I have made a huge chunk of it.... I will pay the rest before the due date.  Not the banks fault... IT is MINE...
